Manatee sense of Touch
A manatee’s sense of touch may be the most important to them. They have very sensitive tactile hairs distributed along the body, especially the face. These hairs are likened to whiskers on cats and rats. They are sensitive to vibration, temperature, and tides or currents in the water. These hairs also helps them to navigate even in murky conditions, and make up for what is believed to be poor eyesight. They enjoy being petted and gently scratched and will move or roll over to help you reach just the right place they like.
